Chapter Twenty-Six

Six weeks had passed since the resurgence of my career had begun. In that time, everything, absolutely everything, had changed.

Xero Fear was the new band name, and we had launched a tour, playing a ton of Demolition stuff as well as new tracks, and had already put down a couple of songs for demos and radio play. I was getting calls from everyone, all wanting to get a piece of the new band that had debuted at Lake Lanier. The festival was such a huge success that it was going to be a recurring thing, though the boat idea was going to be tweaked. Namely, Ajay was not going to have anything to do with it.

We had just finished a four-week tour, playing big cities up and down the East Coast and selling out venues of thousands of fans who came from every walk of life. It was so gratifying to find that people hadn’t forgotten me, that they still enjoyed what I did, and that the new music was going over so well.

But every show ended the same way. I would go backstage, have a couple of beers with the boys, then head directly to my hotel room to get to sleep. I had no interest in late nights or parties, and the effect was that the rest of the band was pretty low-key as well. While they clearly stayed up later and had a bit more fun on the road, their nights were far tamer than the nights Demolition used to have.

The problem was, as much as my career seemed to be going the way I envisioned it when the idea of the festival came up, it wasn’t making me happy. Nothing was making me happy. Happiness just wasn’t attainable.

Not after I read Ariel’s texts.

I was mortified with myself. How could I have been so rash to judge her? How could I have been so stupid to ignore her afterward? I was so wrapped up in my past hurt that I couldn’t see that she wasn’t like that. There was a reasonable explanation. Hell, an explanation that had I known about, I would have tried to remedy right then and there, rather make it clear to everyone that I was never going to work with Ajay again.

He deserved bruises. If I ever saw him in person again, he would be paying the price for his actions.

Ariel had tried to come. She had tried to make it backstage, and because security was tight, had been kept out. Then Teresa and her whole mess with Ajay fell into her lap, and it all made perfect sense. She even watched the show from the balcony and told me how great I had been. She was being a good friend to Teresa, and I acted too boldly. Too rashly.

Again.

I was just finishing the last of the pick-ups from the vocal track of the third single in the recording studio. It was the song I had written specifically about Ariel. I wondered, when she heard it that night if she’d known it was about her.
